In 2008, the first citizenM hotel opened at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport. It was, in a word, different. No reception desk, no lobby, no white-glove restaurant. The team was the perfect size –big enough for fabulous guest service, yet small enough for guests to see the same friendly faces again and again.
After Schiphol Airport (a consistently top-rated airport sleepover, by the way), we opened two more locations in the city of 1,200 bridges: citizenM Amsterdam South in the middle of the glass-and-steel Zuidas business district, and citizenM Amstel Amsterdam in the famous historic canal ring. But, we didn’t stop at the Golden Age ephemera and canalhouses of the capital. We moved out to Rotterdam –the Netherlands’ second largest city, a world-renowned business and creative hub. Today, we have 27 hotels in 17 cities, but we never forget where we came from –or why we started.
We want to give our guests the best hotel experience of their life, which is why we came up with the citizenM contactless stay. Using our app, guests check-in on their own phone on the way to the hotel. One stop at the kiosk to pick up a key card and activate it with their phone. The room is also controlled by the app –lights, blinds, temperature, TV and entertainment. And on departure day, it’s an easy app check-out.
