ALEXANDER INN – The Art Scene In Town

In Philadelphia’s historic district, the Alexander Inn is close to the Pennsylvania Convention Center, the Italian Market, and Rittenhouse Square, which was planned by city founder William Penn. We are particularly enthused by the local arts scene. Here are our picks for the best places to see art around Alexander Inn and Philadelphia:

Philadelphia Museum of Art

Famously featured in Rocky’s iconic scene, the Philadelphia Museum of Art is an ideal place to begin a tour of the city’s art scene. A golden statue of Diana graces the Great Stair Hall. Renoir, Monet, Manet, and Degas are among the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists represented in the New European Galleries. The Barnes Foundation

The Barnes Foundation was established by Albert C. Barnes in 1922 with the goal of educating people about the arts. An impressive collection of modern European art can be found at the Barnes Foundation. Ancient Greek artifacts, African art, and Native American pottery are also on display. Ongoing exhibits feature works by Renoir, Cezanne, Picasso, Van Gogh, and Matisse.

The Rodin Museum

The Rodin Museum is situated on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway along the Schuylkill River and houses a large collection of Auguste Rodin’s sculptures. The neoclassical building and formal gardens were designed for Jules Mastbaum’s extensive Rodin sculpture collection by architect Paul Cret and landscape architect Jacques-Henri-Auguste Gréber in the late 1920s.

Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens

The Magic Gardens in South Philadelphia were designed by local artist Isaiah Zagar. Multiple murals are revealed and interpreted during tours of the site and the surrounding neighborhood.

Woodmere Art Museum

In the Woodmere Art Museum, Charles Knox Smith chose works that reflected the Philadelphia he knew after the Civil War. A bust of Abraham Lincoln and a variety of landscape portraits and nature-inspired works by Frederic Edwin Church and Jasper Cropsey are among the highlights.
