Opening in 1998 and still privately owned, we’ve been welcoming guests to London’s ‘Cultured Independent’ hotel for a quarter-century.
If we say so ourselves, One Aldwych is a very special place. Genuinely independent, it means we have the freedom to be spontaneous and surprising in everything we do. The hotel’s pared-back spaces and quirky details have been credited with defining the modern aesthetic of luxury boutique hotels around the world.
The building in which One Aldwych inhabits is no stranger to headline news, commissioned in 1905 as the home of The Morning Post newspaper (the presses used to roll in what is now the swimming pool). Designed by Anglo-French architects Mewes and Davis, the exterior is a blend of English grandeur and Parisian glamour, an important example of Edwardian architecture that is now a London landmark.
The interiors, however, are always evolving. The bedrooms and suites were recently reimagined by designer Robert Angell, using simple architectural backdrops, layered with upscale pieces to evoke the style of a grand residence.
