Important changes are coming to the TSA checkpoint that your clients should know about. Starting May 7, 2025, to board domestic flights, a traveler’s driver’s license or state-issued ID must be a REAL ID–or another acceptable form of ID will be required. That’s not too far away, so it’s time to remind your clients to get REAL ID ready.
Of course, some of us may already have a driver’s license or ID that’s a REAL ID and not even know it. So how can you tell? In general, a REAL ID features a star in the upper right or upper left corner – but that’s not true in every state. Fortunately, TSA created an interactive tool at tsa.gov/real-id that will let your clients know if they are REAL ID ready. Residents of Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont and Washington may also use a state-issued enhanced driver’s license (EDL) to fly. EDLs are a TSA acceptable form of identification and are marked with a U.S. flag. The full list of acceptable identifications at the TSA checkpoint is available here.
With the deadline approaching on May 7, 2025, there’s still time, but TSA is recommending everyone upgrade soon to avoid the crunch at the DMV. Consider sending your clients a reminder today–they’ll definitely appreciate the tip. To find out how to upgrade to a REAL ID, you can visit tsa.gov/real-id or get information at your local DMV. Then we’ll all be ready to fly.
